My first attempt in the “design something each day” challenge from Smashing Magazine. I have to say I was inspired by the typographical work Jason VanLue is doing for the same challenge.

I started with the bottom one in a sans-serif typeface and then tried another in a serif font.

San-serif typeface is League Gothic, a free download from The League of Moveable Type.

Serif typeface is Trajan Pro and Trajan Pro Bold. My alma mater, The University of Kansas is now using Trajan. It is used in a KU throw that my mother gave me last Christmas. I saw it on my bed when I was developing the idea and decided to give it a try.
