I was playing around with a logo/mark idea today. I have been using “webcraftsman” as my user name on Twitter and other social networking sites. I believe craftsman is a great way to describe how God made me. I really enjoy the process of bringing a design to life. I had created a new theme for my Web site based on Exodus 31:3. God filled Bezalel with the Holy Spirit for the purpose of devising artistic designs for the tabernacle. Bezalel was a craftsman. I began thinking of myself as a “web” craftsman.
The logo/mark is purposefully similar to the WordPress logo/mark. WordPress solutions has become an area of specialty. I wanted to reflect that in this iteration of an identity. I don’t know if I will go in this direction but it was fun to explore the idea.
Every practice has a set of rules which governs it. Mastery occurs with the realization of these rules. Innovation occurs at the point of intelligent and creative rebellion against them.
When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty. I only think about how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution isn’t beautiful, I know it is wrong.
This was an idea I had last week in celebration of my wife’s return home. I took care of our three kids (9, 6, and 3) for a week while my wife cared for her mother. This was an idea that came into my head as we were leaving to pick her up at the airport last Wednesday.
It is interesting how ideas have just been coming to me that have allowed me to engage in this challenge to design something every day. The thought came to me this afternoon to make a graphic to put on my Web site that would point to this space on Tumblr where I am posting my work. I may work on some more iterations in the days to come.
Colophon:
Candara and Candara Bold. It was the typeface already up in Fireworks and I liked it enough to just stay with it. I like experimenting with the Microsoft fonts.
The blue came from Epic Movement Web site color. I am going to do a project for them and will use their color scheme to fit it into the branding.
I am still trying to decide if I want to commit to the “design something each day” challenge from Smashing Magazine. I have several other goals that I am considering. I don’t want to stretch myself too thin.
I have had the chance to design a couple of things over the past 2 weeks, so I am going to go ahead and throw these out there.
Andy Clarke issued a challenge on January 5th to design a business card for a detective agency. I started working on a concept on January 8.
From the beginning, my idea was to play on the 404 - Page not found that is very familiar to me in my work in Web design. I also thought of a lot of different elements associated with a gumshoe.
I have not had a lot of time to work on my idea because I am Dad at home watching three young kids 9,6, and 3. I worked on the concept on Friday and then got into Photoshop and Fireworks yesterday and today.
I happened to see a post of 404 error pages and saw the page Mike Kus designed for Carsonified. It fit well into my concept idea. But I feel like it is too close to Mike’s design for me to submit this iteration to Andy Clarke’s contest.
